On July 21st, 2017, CEI held its annual Summer Leadership Conference at the Doubletree Hilton in Tarrytown, NY. Each year, the summer conference is an opportunity to offer high-quality professional development workshops as well as connect educators throughout New York City with the best educational resources available. With over 500 participants, 50 education exhibitors, and 30 workshops, the day was an incredible success!
The morning opened with a riveting performance by the 2016 Voice Finalist, Wé McDonald followed by a welcome speech by CEI’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Kohlhagen. Mr. Kohlhagen spoke about CEI’s commitment to courage, collaboration, and innovation and how the organization’s current programs, partnerships, and work is grounded in a history of engaging and supporting school leaders and making the school the center of change.
During the morning session, Dr. Lester Young, NYS Regent, delivered an empowering speech about the critical importance of education and equity for all students and how, as educators, our most important job is to make sure young people “go as far as their hopes, dreams, and hard work takes them”. He also spoke about the diversity and integration work that the State Education Department is doing with the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative, which CEI continues to provide support on the Bronx MBK’s planning committee as well as in districts and schools across the state.
Afterward, participants separated to attend 2 pre-selected workshops, chosen during online registration, as well as had the opportunity to walk through the exhibitor hall where over 50 education sponsors showcased the newest and best educational resources available.
Some examples of available workshops were:
- Introduction to Instructional Rounds
- The Art of Progressive Discipline
- Identifying and Evaluating Effective Use of Technology
- Using Music to Teach Early Literacy Skills in PreK and K
- Math Designed for Flexibility and Customization for Students
During lunch, participants gathered together once again where Sy Fliegel, CEI’s President, gave a touching tribute to the late Reggie Landeau, Sr. and presented him with a Lifetime Achievement award, which was accepted by his son, Reggie Landeau, Jr.
Afterward, Dr. Bernard Harris, Astronaut and President of the Harris Foundation, delivered a valuable speech about the importance of preparing students to compete in a global society. CEI currently partners with the Harris Foundation on STEAM initiatives to ensure children, no matter their background, have the skills to graduate high school and college and become global citizens, ready to produce the technology of tomorrow.
CEI is proud to be able to bring together educators to share ideas, successes, and best practices and connect schools with new and innovative educational resources.
