4 NYC Charter Students to Attend World Food Summit in Denmark

Four NYC charter school students who attend a charter high school for over-aged, under-credited youth were invited to the renowned World Food Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark later this month, participating in a cooking competition for a gala, which will be attended by Denmark’s Queen Margrethe.

The John V. Lindsay Wildcat Academy Charter School is an alternative high school for students who have literally or figuratively “dropped out” of traditional public schools. When students seek admission to Wildcat, they are requesting a “second chance” to achieve academic success and earn a high school diploma.

Today, 500 students are attending one of the two Wildcat campuses. The Bronx campus, located in the Hunt’s Point (one of the poorest neighborhoods in the Bronx) provides classes and services to students with less the 21 credits (freshman and sophomores). At the Manhattan campus, located in the Wall Street area, students with 21+ credits attend (juniors and seniors).

JVL’s Culinary Internship program, at its Bronx campus, has proven not only to be highly successful at teaching its students how to work interactively while simultaneously learning employability skills in the kitchen setting, but also is a major reason students are motivated to remain in school. The Culinary Program Curriculum satisfies industry standards in nutrition, hygiene, safety, kitchen inventory, and budgeting while also building business skills, character, and good work habits.

In JVL Wildcat’s Hydroponics program, students create vertical green walls and window gardens in a closed-loop system that ensures nutrients stay within the system and that there is no run-off. The system is disease and pest free.  The garden is used to support the school’s culinary program and encourages healthy eating and living through urban gardening.

Denmark’s Minister for the Environment and Food visited the school in 2016 and was impressed at how the students were learning culinary skills and about urban farming and hydroponic gardening. The Minister extended an invitation to the World Food Summit because of their commitment to urban farming and sustainable culinary practices. Four students are scheduled to attend, along with the school leader, Ron Tabano.

The two-day summit will discuss challenges, share best practices, set targets and take action through global and local partnerships. In order to underscore and anchor the relevance of providing better food for more people in the society, the World Food Summit 2017 will include a series of side activities, including social mega dinner, food exhibition “Bite Copenhagen”, case competition, food trips, EMBLA and an official dinner.
